Check your suppliers against the waste carrier register

If someone takes waste away from your business, the law expects you to have checked that they are registered to do it, and if that waste is later fly-tipped, the liability can come back to you. Paste your supplier list or drop in a spreadsheet, and this page checks every one of them against the Environment Agency public register for England, up to 250 at a time. Your list is read in your own browser. The spreadsheet itself never leaves your machine, only the names and numbers we need to look up. That is why it needs scripting, and it is a better trade than uploading a supplier list to us.

What this tells you, and what it does not

A waste carrier registration is a legal requirement for anyone who transports waste as part of a business. It is not a rating, a vetting or a mark of quality, and this page never treats it as one. What it gives you is the register's answer for each supplier on a particular day, and a record that you asked.

Five things a row can come back as

On the register: The supplier holds a current registration. Where there is an expiry date, it is in the future.
Expiring soon: Upper tier registrations run for three years and have to be renewed. This is the column worth a diary note rather than an alarm.
Expired, or no longer on the register: The registration has run out, or it was on the register and is not now. A registration can come off by expiring, by being cancelled, or by being revoked, and the register does not say which. Worth asking about before the next collection.
More than one match found: The register holds several businesses under that name, and all of them are on it. One more detail settles which is yours: the registration number from their paperwork, or a postcode. We will not pick for you, because the wrong firm's registration beside your supplier's name is a record you might rely on later.
No matching record: This is not a finding that a firm is unlicensed. It means our search found nothing for the words you gave us, which is most often a trading name that differs from the registered one, a spelling, or a registration too recent to appear. Ask the supplier for the number on their paperwork and check that.

Where the answers come from

Every answer is the Environment Agency public register for England, which we read daily and hold in full: around 417,000 registrations, not a selection. Scotland is regulated by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Wales by Natural Resources Wales, each with a separate register, so a business absent from this site may be properly registered there. Scotland and Wales to be added imminently.
