A fridge left behind in the kitchen is hazardous waste
Environment Agency and Defra guidance on classifying waste electrical equipment lists fridges, freezers, chillers and air conditioning units as hazardous, whether or not they hold ozone-depleting substances as coolants or foam blowing agents. From a household the codes are 20 01 23* and 20 01 35*, and the asterisk is what marks a code hazardous. Where an assessment cannot settle whether an item is hazardous, the guidance says to treat it as hazardous as a precaution.

What the register settles, and what to ask the firm
We publish the register. Here is where it stops.
It does tell you
- That the business is registered to transport waste
- Which tier the registration sits in
- When the registration expires
It does not tell you
- That the work will be done well
- Anything about complaints, insurance or disputes
- That anyone has inspected their vehicles or staff
