Booking ahead is now the rule at a good many centres

Booking systems spread after 2020 and plenty have stayed. Oxfordshire has required a booking since 14 January 2026, bookable up to two weeks ahead or thirty minutes before arrival, with asbestos visits needing 48 hours' notice. In its consultation response of 20 December 2023 the government said it was important to ensure booking systems are not perceived as an obstacle by residents, and that it would keep the question under review.
